Analgesics for the treatment of fibromyalgia
Published by John Gardner on November 20, 2011The first step of the doctors to deal with fibromyalgia pain is to start a course of pain medications.
Ibuprofen, Aspirin and Tylenol are the drugs prescribed in the first course of pain killers for patients with fibromyalgia. Patients in this condition often find that treatment of pain, with analgesics, is not the most effective treatment. Normally if the effect is not seen, the doctor will prescribe some much stronger for the pain. They may try increasing the doses of Tramadol or other opioid such as morphine and hydrocodone.
They might prescribe antidepressants of some type to assist with fibromyalgia.
The prescribed antidepressants will may or may not be for depression only, as they could contain pain relief to combat the symptoms. There is a new drug on the market, Cymbalta, which has shown great promise in the treatment patients with fibromyalgia. A number of drugs like Amitriptyline, Pamelor, Doxepin, Prozac, Zoloft and Effexor are similar to Cymbalta and already in the market, being prescribed. Reducing the pain in fibromyalgia patients has an effect on the moods, as the neurotransmitters that relay the signals for mood and pain are the same. This makes antidepressants a good treatment for depression and fibromyalgia pain.
Anticonvulsant treatments of fibromyalgia.
It is not uncommon for your doctor to prescribe an anticonvulsant rather than as an antidepressant Cymbalta. Anticonvulsants like Lyrica are often used to effectively treat fibromyalgia. People suffering from fibromyalgia, can in fact be treated with Lyrica as the only drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Anticonvulsants work in the same way as depression, drugs are, by blocking pain signals in the brain. Many people who were prescribed Lyrica gave a positive feedback of pain reduction and significant increase in everyday health.
Other medicines for fibromyalgia.
Treating pain relief symptoms of the fibromyalgia patients is only a part of the whole treatment strategy. There are other symptoms that your doctor would have to treat, including sleep disorders, muscle pain and spasms. To treat sleep disorder, the doctor may prescribe drugs like Ambien. Muscle spasms are normally treated with drugs like Flexeril, which should be taken at bedtime. There might be a need to treat other symptoms with medication. Being a fibromyalgia patient, you will probably be prescribed either Cymbalta or Lyrica for your treatment. Doctors treating fibromyalgia often attempt treatments with a combination of different drugs and therapies, to reduce the pain due to fibromyalgia.
Some new therapies in May that your doctor recommends physical therapy, massage therapy, chiropractic manipulation, acupuncture, counseling and biofeedback. In most cases, your best chance for relief to set you on a combination of medication and non-drug therapies. Once you have done some permutation combination of drugs and therapies to see what works best for you, hopefully living with fibromyalgia will not be as big a burden.
