Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that affects the muscles and soft tissues of the body. Symptoms can include fatigue, headaches, sleep disorders, aches, and pains and much more. It is a condition that affects 3 to 6 million people through out Canada and the United States. There is no known cause for this condition and as yet no cure. Medical treatment often consists of pain medication and little else. Though it can cause and interfere with daily tasks and the quality of life it is not a life threatening condition.

If you are one of the millions of people who are affected by this condition you have probably been told that there is little than can be done and that you simply have to “live with the condition.” However, while there is no really effective medical treatment for this condition there are several natural treatments that have proven to be helpful and effective for many suffers of fibromyalgia.

Diet

Eating a healthy diet can improve your immune system, increase your energy level and make you feel healthier overall making it easy to deal with your condition and the symptoms surrounding it. Eating right can help to stave off the depression that chronic pain can cause and give you a more positive outlook on life.

While eating a good balanced diet could prove helpful it is important to avoid known allergens and foods that are known to aggravate inflammation. Adding herbs and spices to your diet such as ginger and turmeric which are known to reduce inflammation around joints has proven helpful to many people suffering from fibromyalgia. Eating plenty of raw fruits and vegetables and drinking fruit and vegetable juices will add and minerals to your system.

Exercise

Because of the chronic pain associated with fibromyalgia many suffers avoid exercise not wishing to suffer more pain. However, mild exercise such as walking and swimming can over time help reduce the pain and muscle stiffness you are experiencing as it increases blood flow to these joints and muscles. It also strengthens and tones muscles relieving some of the pain.

Yoga exercises and other breathing exercises that help to relax the body and mind have proven helpful as well in reducing and even eliminating some of the symptoms of this condition.

Massage

Massage to ease tense muscles has also proven beneficial in many suffers. Though in some cases, when pain is at its worse massage may be unbearable and therefore should be avoided, keeping to a massage program when the pain is less and touch can be tolerated can help to keep the muscles relaxed and help reduce stiffness.

Stress Management

Stress management may also help as many people feel an increase in their symptoms when they are under increased stress. Knowing how to deal effectively with stress can help alleviate many of the symptoms you are experiencing.

While there is no cure for fibromyalgia there are natural treatments you can try that can reduce and even eliminate many of the symptoms of this painful condition.
